Gai Jatra being observed

KATHMANDU, AUG 22 - Gai Jatra is being observed amidst festivities and disguises on Thursday.

Families who have lost their members and relatives during the year are parading the streets of three cities of Kathmandu Valley, disguised as cows or with actual decorated cows, in memoriam of the deceased. Different comical shows have been organised throughout the country, most of them passing satires at the current leadership vacuum in the nation today. It is believed that the festival was initiated by King Pratap Malla during the Malla reign, to help his wife recover from the loss of their son.
